Alberta
is a female Black Lab, born 6 January 2008. She is being raised by Pam,
Steve, Virginia, Katherine and Rebekah of East Rochester. Alberta is the
third GEB puppy they've raised.
Alberta passed her IFT exam on 30 June 2009 and is now in training!

We had a wonderful trip down to the Guiding Eyes for the Blind
Training School and Canine Development Center over this past weekend, even if
the trip home was slow due to some pretty snowy weather.
Although it was difficult to say good-bye to Noel, the puppy
that we have been raising for Guiding Eyes for the past 16 months, we were
blessed to be able to bring home a new little bundle of fluff to begin
training. Alberta, a black
Labrador retriever, is just 9 weeks old and is a very sweet girl. I am
looking forward to watching her grow, teaching her new skills, and exposing
her to many public places in preparation for her future career as a Guide Dog.
Even though we did not name her or get to pick her out, Alberta
has a very special name. One of my dearest Aunts, my father's sister,
was named Alberta. She used to
sit next to my sister and I at church every Sunday while my mother sang in the
choir, and I got to know her very well. Little Alberta
will be raised in loving memory of my beloved Aunt Birdie and my dad, who
recently passed away.
Now that Alberta has gone in to training, Pam reminisces:
Alberta was quite a special dog to raise. Spunky, silly,
bouncy and sweet, she was always ready and willing to please. She loved to
go on "adventures," especially to church and the local elementary school.
She just loved to be around children, and was always gentle with them --
even when a toddler stuck her finger up Alberta's nose! She also debuted as
a actress as the "black sheep of Jerusalem" for our church's winter Vacation
Bible School program.
One of the highlights of raising Alberta was doing a
presentation with her at my childhood church, where I often sat with my Aunt
Alberta. Although Alberta was not named after my Aunt, it was a special
blessing to be able to raise a puppy in memory of my Aunt Birdie. We often
called Alberta by my Aunt's nickname -- it seemed to suit her since she
loved to jump and often seemed to fly across our backyard.
Although Alberta has definitely left a hole in our hearts, we
know that she will be a very special and loving friend to a future
sight-impaired person!
