Raiser Nikki writes:
Carla is an amazing dog! She was absolutely
full of energy and full of life. She had lots of little unique quirks that
made every one laugh, like how loudly she would groan when you rubbed her ears
for her or how she would hang her head and give you her best "puppy dog
eyes" and a nice loud sigh when you stopped petting her. She is the
softest dog in the world. She had lots of crimps on her back end and when
she got wet it looked like she'd had her ears permed. She loved to cuddle
with anyone and everyone, especially if they'd give her ears a rub while she
did. She was always trying to cuddle with my other dog, Avalon, who is a
cranky 6 year old who would get up as soon as Carla laid down next to her and
walk away! Eventually Carla learned to cuddle with my old stuffed animals
when she slept, but she never gave up on Avalon and always tried at least once
to cuddle with her before she turned to the stuffed animals! Carla's
favorite thing to do at night was to hold "hands." She'd just
lift her paw and I'd hold on to it for a few minutes, then she'd head off to
bed! She just liked to have her paw rubbed! Sometimes she'd get
tired and switch paws but she would always want to do that before she climbed
into bed. I miss Carla terribly because she was just an incredible dog
with a wonderful personality. Everyone who met her just fell in love and
I'm sure her partner is really enjoying her and how hard she tries to please!
From the Guiding Eyes web:
Denise C,
47, came to Guiding Eyes from Canada for her second guide dog, Carla. Denise was
diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa when she was nineteen. Like so many
students, she came to Guiding Eyes upon the enthusiastic recommendation of a
former student. Denise, a mother of two, describes herself as a “lady of
leisure” who, along with her volunteer work speaking at focus groups, enjoys
hooking heritage rugs. Denise’s husband is also sightless, but between them,
they have entered into an interesting “division of labor agreement.” Very
simply, Denise is the “kennel keeper” with two dogs at home, she will feed,
exercise and tend to their needs. Her husband does the cooking, at which, she
says, he excels. Denise knows that while Carla has a sweet, cuddly personality,
she also has a solid work ethic. “With Carla at my side, I don’t walk, I
fly. We are one. Thank you, Guiding Eyes."
