About GEB

Twice monthly during the '07-'08 school year, retired guide dog, Flame, along with certified therapy dog, Potter, participated in Breakfast and a Book Club at Canal View Elementary School in Spencerport.

The Reading Specialist incorporated the dogs into this club after learning about the benefits of similar "Reading to Rover" programs throughout the country.  Research shows that reluctant readers become more fluent and gain additional reading skills by reading out loud to a non-judgmental dog, who listens quietly and never corrects the child's mistakes.

Each student brought a favorite book to read to one of the dogs, and several parents commented that reading to Flame or Potter was their children's favorite aspect of school!
