On September 17, 2005, a fund raiser was held at the Reservoir Creek Golf Course.  Many volunteers pitched in above and beyond what they do raising puppies to make the event a success.  In addition to the golf tournament, the day included a silent auction and lots of fun.  Thank you to our GEB volunteers and a special thank you to all our golfers and sponsors for supporting our special pups.  Visit our Calendar of Events page for information on the 2nd Annual Putt for the Pups to be held Saturday, September 9th, 2006.

The wonderful people at the Regional Transit Service occasionally bring a bus to class so the pups can experience a bus ride.  It is a unique training opportunity for the pups.  Many thanks to RTS for participating in one of our August, 2005 classes.

On Saturday, May 14, 2005, local raisers attended the Lions Convention held in Rochester, NY.  Lions Clubs International  are over 1.35 members strong and have members in 197 countries.  One of their missions is to assist those who have visual impairment.

Arcadia Middle School 6th grade teacher, Yvonne Hood, invited Guiding Eyes for the Blind to participate in their annual Day of Caring held on May 3rd.  Students rotated between four rooms for 1/2 hour periods. One room they saw the "Audrey to Merlin" video that tells the story of a guide dog, another they experienced hands on activities using visually impaired glasses, smelly jars and examples of Braille material, the third was visiting with actual GEB puppies (Potter and Riggs) and asking questions of the raisers Cindy Chait, Diane Mogavero and Sandy Walker and the last was making/baking home made dog cookies for the Monroe Region's 17 Guiding Eyes puppies in pre-training.

In the afternoon the 6th grade class participated in BOWLING FOR PUPS. The students had approached family members for pledges and even pledged themselves by returning pop bottles and doing jobs for extra money. This remarkable group of students raised a total of $667.34 for Guiding Eyes. What a wonderful accomplishment for these children and their 6th Grade Team of teachers.  Thanks from all of us at Guiding Eyes for an outstanding job.

Despite the bad weather, we all had a great time visiting the Girl Scout Troops 794 and 825 and Daisy troop 872 on Monday, January 17, 2005.  Many thanks to the girls who gave the pups such a warm welcome.   Thanks, also, to Gary and Yami, Sandy and Logan, Cindy and Eileen (who was visiting from the Central New York region), Diane and Yorktown, and Donna , who was between puppies at the time of the meeting (having given Heidi back to GEB 2 days earlier).

This year was witness to a new theme for the tree we decorate annually at the Granger Homestead in Canandaigua, NY.  "Gifts of Independence" decorations consisted of white boxes adorned with red and blue ribbons.  Some boxes were closed and give the impression of gifts yet to be received.  Other boxes are open and have pictures of puppies with their raisers or guides with their graduates.  The new theme received the award for the "Best Community Tree."

In late April, 2001, the Monroe Puppy Raisers once again participated in the annual Camp Read-A-Lot program at the Leo Bernabi School in Spencerport, NY.  Raisers brought their dogs in to the classrooms and read cool guide-dog-related books to the kids at school.    It's hard to tell who had the most  fun - the kids, the raisers, or the dogs!!   Among this year's participants were Gloria and Barb with Bateman, the Sandy with Arcadia, and  David and Area Co-Coodinator Cindy with Roman. And of course, our fearless leader and Area Coordinator Donna with Adela.

In March 2001, Monroe GEB held an informational session at Crane Elementary School in Henrietta.   The session was open to the public - anyone seeking information regarding Guide Dog puppy raising was encouraged to attend.    There was a great turnout of visitors, and all the dogs had fun "showin' off"!
